AI and sales news this week: September 28 to October 2, 2026 recap

This week in AI and sales: WhatsApp started charging for API service replies, OpenAI found two thirds of what AI produces for small businesses is now agent work, ElevenLabs handles 15 million conversations a week and LinkedIn announced Hiring Assistant 2. With sources, dates and what to do about each one.

The most important news of the week of September 28 to October 2, 2026: since October 1, WhatsApp charges per message for service replies sent through the WhatsApp Business API, although conversations that start from an ad remain free for 72 hours. OpenAI found that in August two thirds of what AI produced for small businesses was agent work, double the April share. And in prospecting, the idea of the week: a message makes sense when there is a concrete reason to send it today.

How this recap was put together: It gathers the topics MAMBO published on social media between September 28 and October 2, including MAMBO News #2. Each data point carries its source and date; sources were checked on October 6, 2026.

  • OpenAI, 2 of 3: Small business output tokens that came from agents in August; it was 1 of 3 in April.
  • ElevenLabs, 15M: Weekly conversations handled by its voice agents, triple February's figure.
  • WhatsApp, 72 h: Replies remain free when the conversation starts from an ad.
  • LinkedIn, 30%: More applications than before the pandemic, according to its CEO.

Prospecting: a good reason to write today (Sep 28)

A company opened an office or posted an SDR role. Is that a signal to reach out? It may be a clue, but it does not confirm a need yet. Before using it, check three things: that it is recent, that it relates to the person you chose and that it connects with something you can actually offer.

What to do: before each message, write one line on why you are writing today and not six months ago. If you cannot, it is not a signal. The seven signals that work best are in a separate article.

Advertising: the inquiry arrived, now what? (Sep 30)

A campaign does not end when the inquiry comes in. Someone has to reply, understand what that person needs and keep the conversation going. If that path is unclear, it is hard to know why one opportunity moves forward and another is lost.

What to do: take the last twenty inquiries that came from ads and note who replied, how long it took and how each one ended. That shows whether targeting is failing, information is missing or nobody owned the follow-up.

OpenAI introduced Dots at DevDay (Sep 29)

OpenAI launched Dots, always-on agents that work in the background toward goals the user sets. According to TechCrunch, they have been available since September 29 for ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium subscribers in eligible markets. The live presentation had hiccups that got as much attention as the product.

What to do: before leaving an agent to work on its own, decide who reviews its work and how to stop it if something goes wrong.

MAMBO News #2 (Oct 2): the five stories

OpenAI: small business AI moved from answering to doing

OpenAI reported on September 30 that 4 million small business employees used its tools during one week in September, nearly 1 in 5 at companies with fewer than 10 people. In August, agentic AI accounted for two thirds of small business output tokens, double its April share. These are OpenAI figures about its own usage, not Argentina-specific data.

What to do: pick a task you repeat every week, like the Monday report, and hand it over entirely. Then review it yourself.

ElevenLabs: 15 million voice conversations a week

According to Reuters (September 30), ElevenLabs voice agents handle more than 15 million conversations a week, triple the February figure, and the company completed a US$300 million employee share sale at a US$22 billion valuation.

What to do: list the inbound calls that repeat the same way every week. Those are the candidates for a voice agent. Automated voice works for handling what comes in, not for calling people who do not know you.

WhatsApp started charging for API replies

Since October 1, 2026, Meta charges per message for service messages sent through the WhatsApp Business Platform (the API), the same way it charges for templates. The free 72-hour window for conversations that start from a Click to WhatsApp ad is unchanged. The free WhatsApp Business app is not affected.

What to do: ask your provider for the per-message rate in your country and count how many replies you sent in September. Those two numbers tell you how much your bill changes.

LinkedIn: Hiring Assistant 2 and 30% more applications

At Talent Connect (September 30), LinkedIn introduced Hiring Assistant 2, its recruiter agent, with memory of each recruiter's preferences and candidate interest signals. It begins rolling out to customers in early November. The same day, CEO Dan Shapero told Fortune that job seekers send 30% more applications than before the pandemic.

What to do: if you are hiring sellers or SDRs, write three things the candidate must have done, not three adjectives. What you ask for becomes the filter.

Gemini 4: released, but almost nobody can use it

Google introduced Gemini 4 Argon on September 30, with output of up to 1 million tokens. Initial access is limited to a group of cybersecurity teams; paid API customers and Google AI Ultra subscribers come next, with no confirmed date.

What to do: nothing to install yet. Note a long task, like a full proposal, to test it when access opens.

What I would do on Monday

  • If you answer inquiries through the WhatsApp API, work out what October costs with the new pricing.
  • Pick a sales task you repeat every week and hand it over entirely to AI; on Tuesday, review it yourself.
  • Before every prospecting message, write one line on why today.
